"12 Days to Move Property last 40 miles?!?"

12 Days to Move Property last 40 miles?!?by

We STILL do not have our personal and business property. We prepaid $13,460 to move our property from Grenada in the West Indies to California. St. Louis Moving Service in Grenada handled the packing and shipping to the U.S. They contracted with Intermove in Connecticut to handle the movement and unpacking of our property in the U.S. As we are reimbursed by our employer, and have business materials in the shipment, cost was less a concern than efficiency. Our property arrived at port in Houston from Grenada on May 7. After asking repeatedly about the ETA from there to our home, Intermove told us they could not know the ETA. That seems odd and not what we have experienced with other moves. Ten days AFTER our property had arrived in Houston, Intermove told us our property was now on rail in Arizona, on its way to Oakland, California. The next communication we got was the load was in Oakland being handled by a different company, Marine Land Air, whom Intermove hired to deliver and unpack our belongings. We thus expected to get our property in 2-3 days. Marine Land Air needed to off load the boxes and two beds in Sacramento on a smaller truck to prepare for delivery to our home 42 miles east of Sacramento. On May 22 (15 days after our property arrived in Houston) we received a separate invoice from this subcontractor, Marine Land Air, who wanted to be paid in cash in advance for off loading our property to a smaller truck in Sacramento for delivery to our home (this extra charge on top of the $13,000 we already paid was due to their inability to get their large container truck on our wooded lane). Pre-paying cash made us leery, even though the amount was only about $500. And we were all the more leery when Marine Land Air told us Intermove had not yet paid them either, and that typically they are paid by the contractor, not the customer, for such services. We said we were willing to pay by Marine Land Air by credit card, which made them leery (!) We agreed on May 23 with them to instead to pay by cash upon delivery, and expected delivery within a day or two. We were dismayed that we were dealing with, and paying Intermove’s subcontractors directly, rather than Intermove, and in such an unprofessional way. We said as much to Intermove and they emailed this response: “I can tell you upfront that if we have to pay Marine Air (sic) and you pay us we are looking at a couple of more days before we can schedule your delivery plus there is an accounting administration fee of $100.” During several previous international moves, handled by Corrigan, we didn’t have to work directly with their subcontractors. And we were always able to track the location of our goods. But since things have gone from suspiciously unprofessional to outrageous. Intermove does not seem to be scheduling the delivery of our property at all, and Marine Land Air tells us that they can't move our property the mere 42 miles to our home for 12 days after they received our property and unloaded it in Sacramento!!!! Yes, 12 days to move our property by truck the last 42 miles! This is crazy! I moved an entire house from Florida to California in less time than it is taking them to move our property a mere 42 miles! Their delivery date is one day after we leave for a month long consulting job that we were careful to schedule long after our business and personal property should arrive. We did allow extra time, and added time on top to be super safe to ensure we had time to get our work-related materials needed to prepare our presentations. But this is simply beyond the pale! Not sure how we are going to work this out but we now have our company’s attorney advising us on what we need to do to get our business property that is being held 40 miles away so we can do our jobs. This absurd delay in the delivery of our property feels like theft. It certainly is robbing us of our ability to do our jobs! Consumer, you have been forewarned!
